After making three sumptuous dramas in a row—”I Am Love,” “A Bigger Splash,” “Call Me By Your Name“—director Luca Guadagnino is taking a big shift in a new direction with “Suspiria.” The remake of the iconic Italian horror by Dario Argento will be no small feat, but he’s got some strong talent to realize his vision of the material. Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Mia Goth, Chloë Grace Moretz, Lutz Ebersdorf, and Jessica Harper, from the original film, lead the main cast, but perhaps most intriguing of all is Radiohead frontman, Thom Yorke, providing an original score.
The task of scoring “Suspiria” is not lost on Yorke, whose work will for better or worse be compared to Goblin, the Italian band who music for Argento’s film is a vital ingredient to its influence and resonance. Stopping by BBC‘s “The First Time With…,” Yorke admits that working on “Suspiria” is “terrifying,” but reveals that one of his inspirations is Vangelis‘ compositions on “Blade Runner,” which is certainly intriguing. It’s not a surprise that Yorke might go down a more electronic path—he doesn’t read sheet music, so orchestral works are out of the question—especially given his solo output.
Listen to the full interview segment below. No word yet on a release date for “Suspiria,” but given that Yorke is currently on tour with Radiohead, a fall festival premiere seems like a tight deadline.
