Rooney Mara fights off amorous admirers in the first trailer for the upcoming period drama, “The Secret Scripture.”
Loosely based on Sebastian Barry’s 2008 novel of the same name, the film co-stars Vanessa Redgrave, Jack Reynor, Theo James, and Eric Bana. It follows an elderly woman committed to a mental hospital, reflecting on her life during the turbulent times of the 1930s and 1940s. Here’s the synopsis from EW:
The Secret Scripture follows a 100-year-old Irish woman, Rose McNulty (Redgrave), who keeps a detailed diary of her life during her stay at a mental hospital. Mara plays a younger version of Rose navigating personal woes — she’s suspected of murdering her own child, of mysterious origin — during a time of political and social upheaval.
The film was directed by six-time Academy Award Nominee Jim Sheridan. The Irish director also won two Oscars for 1989 biographical drama “My Left Foot,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis.
After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, “The Secret Scripture” opens on October 13th.
