Ian McKellan & Patrick Stewart Return For 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past'

nullWell, this just got a whole lot more interesting. With the upcoming 'X-Men' movie featuring a plot that involves time travel/time jumping to a certain degree, many wondered if this new series would reach back to the first trilogy of films that were capped off by "X-Men: The Last Stand." And now there is a pretty clear argument that it will likely happen.

Recently signed director and franchise veteran Bryan Singer, hit Twitter today to reveal that Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart aka Magneto and Charles Xavier are joining the returning cast of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult for "X-Men: Days Of Future Past." This has some pretty big implications, as in the comics the story jumps from a present day plot where the X-Men fight against Mystique who is now a baddie, and fronts the Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants and future storyline (where we presume Stewart and McKellen fill in) where mutants live in internment camps. Of course, what "present" is for the younger X-Men remains to be seen. "X-Men: First Class" was set in the '60s and we don't presume it'll jump too far ahead of that, so maybe the "future" will follow 'The Last Stand'? Confused yet?

Either way, it's massive news and one wonders how much more weight it gives the recent rumors surrounding Jean Grey's apparent appearance in "The Wolverine." Are we going to see some Marvel-esque world building between these three pictures? Speculate away, but we'll find out on July 18, 2014. Production begins next year. [THR]
