“If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans. We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet.” — Stephen Hawking
Earlier this year, Hawking dropped the above quote in a Documentary Channel program, and as far as using a contemporary hook to market a film, full credit to Rogue Pictures, it really works.
“Skyline,” the latest feature from music video helmers and video effects dudes Colin and Greg Strause (they also directed “AVPR: Alien Vs. Predator – Requiem” but we’ll pretend that didn’t happen) seems to play out like your standard alien invasion film. But we will say, the effects are certainly impressive and the money shot of thousands of humans being sucked up into an alien ship should definitely get people talking.
But whether or not the film has some real substance to it or is simply a thin concept in attractive packaging remains to be seen. “Skyline” lights up theaters on November 12th.
