If you’re one of the biggest, or at least still-most-buzzed-about bands on the planet, how do you help a filmmaking brother out? Well for one, you put aside constant collaborations with Spike Jonze (who shot a short film with the group, something in Austin, Texas earlier this year) and tap a filmmaker in need of a little love: Terry Gilliam.
Arcade Fire, whose upcoming album, The Suburbs recently leaked, have hired the “Twelve Monkeys” director to helm a livecast from the group’s New York City’s Madison Square Garden show next month.
The Montreal rockers have shown their love for Gilliam before and recorded a version of the “Brazil” theme — Portuguese musician Ary Barroso’s “Aquarela do Brasil” — during the period between their debut album and their sophomore effort Neon Bible on the “Cold Wind” EP (their version is below).
Gilliam’s misfortunes have been well-documented in recent years, so we won’t rehash them here, but maybe, just maybe, this move with such a high-profile group will convince any vacillating investors that they should dump money into his trying-to-find-funding “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote”? We can only hope as this is a huge gig and one of the biggest shows Arcade Fire have ever played.
The Arcade Fire livestream takes place on August 5 at 10 PM EST. Clowns and midgets may not be included. [Variety]
