Got a Tip?

Ellen Page To Star In Lesbian Relationship Drama ‘Freeheld’

Circa “Juno” time, Ellen Page became a star and since she wasn’t throwing her vajayjay around at parties a la Lohan, she instantly was demarcated with the “lesbian” tag which often happens to young, attractive teen stars that aren’t seen in public doing rails in toilets or making out with XYZ young actor.

In many ways, she’s done little to disprove this notion, performing a mock, self-deprecating gay skit on SNL, wearing boys’ underwear, smooching with her “Whip It” director Drew Barrymore, attaching herself to the lesbian werewolf drama, “Jack & Diane” (she dropped out months ago), and generally going about her business in a boring, straight, non-young Hollywood A-list way (lesbian!).

Now THR reports that she’ll star in “Freeheld,” or at least a dramatic feature-length version of that Oscar-winning short documentary by Cynthia Wade (she won the Oscar for best doc short in 2008).

The screenplay is naturally based on same true story as the short, which chronicles the life of a New Jersey car mechanic (Page) and her older, police detective girlfriend, Laurel Hester, who battle to secure Hester’s pension benefits after she is diagnosed with a terminal cancer.

No word on who will play the older woman yet — too bad Susan Sarandon isn’t 45 anymore as she’d be perfect (but yes, she’s still gorgeous). No director is attached yet either, though we think it would be nice to see a male director try this and not botch it. Page, meanwhile, continues to grab whatever project floats her boat, big or small; on the “bigger” end of the scale she’ll be seen later this summer in Christoper Nolan’s “Inception” alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, and, for the record (not that we really care either way), neither of them think she’s gay.

Here’s the original trailer for the doc.
