Horror fans were excited by the news that HBO Max was spearheading a prequel spinoff series, “IT: Welcome To Derry,” loosley based on Stephen King’s “IT” as it would return to the small-town of Derry, Maine, which is plague an interdimentioal creature that feeds on the fear of children and often takes the form of the horrfici Pennywise The Dancing Clown (as Pennywise’s monsterous true form isn’t usually seen).
Debuting later this year, a first-look trailer for “IT: Welcome To Derry” has made its way online showcasing footage from the new series that will be taking place much further in the past (the early 1960s) and sees Andy Muschietti (“The Flash”) returning to direct (four out of the nine episode run) after helming the two feature film remakes that were released back in 2017 and 2019 respectively.
The series, from Warner Bros. Television, was developed for television by filmmakers Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti alongside writer Jason Fuchs, reteaming after working together on “IT Chapter Two.”
Assembled for “Welcome To Derry” is a cast that features Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, Rudy Mancuso, and the super-busy Bill Skarsgård is returning to the Pennywise role.
If you’re not familiar with the “IT” films, a group of children in Derry defeat the child-killing sewer-dwelling clown only for them to be drawn back to their small community as adults, and as more kids start going missing, they discover Pennywise is still alive and killing again.
Pennywise is funny enough, tentatively linked to another big King franchise, “The Dark Tower,” that focuses on different worlds beyond Earth and looming threats from evil interdimensional beings.
