Alejandro G. Iñárritu Teases Tom Cruise Movie A “Wild Comedy Of Human Nature”: “I Was So F***ing Impressed & Happy” [Cannes]

We were all a little surprised when Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu (“The Revenant”) and Tom Cruise decided to join forces with Warner Bros. for a new mysterious film. The filmmaker is now dishing some minor details about the untitled pic while visiting the Cannes Film Festival, which had recently wrapped principal photography at Pinewood Studios in the United Kingdom.

Deadline spoke with Iñárritu, who is attending the Croissette at Cannes for the 25th anniversary of his film “Amores Perros,” and briefly commented on the new project by teasing it won’t be relying on Cruise’s brand of action as there won’t be death-deflying stunts, and that the movie is going to be a “wild comedy” that will be both “scary” and “funny,” quite the tantalizing description.

“No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so f***ing impressed and happy…[Tom Cruise] gives himself. He has an incredible sense of passion. It’s a brutal comedy. It’s a wild comedy of human nature. It’s scary and funny. It’s beautiful. I will start editing next week.”

The acclaimed filmmaker continued to tease the mysterious comedy, “It was a very challenging film, you will see. It’s many borders of many things. Every film challenges me. I don’t like doing things that I’ve done already. This is something that we’ve never done, and it’s exciting as well.”

While the pairing of Cruise and Iñárritu is impressive as it gets, the supporting cast is just as exciting as it features the likes of Jesse Plemons (“Power of The Dog”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of A Fall”), Sophie Wilde (“Babygirl”), Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Emma D’Arcy (“House of The Dragon”), Michael Stuhlbarg (“Boardwalk Empire”), and John Goodman (“The Righteous Gemstones”).

Cruise and the comedy genre won’t automatically click with most people, but we’ve seen the actor dabble in humorous projects and establish multiple times that he has a very healthy sense of humor (even about himself and his work). One good example is Ben Stiller‘s “Tropic Thunder,” playing the balding and pudgy fictional studio executive with an extremely short fuse, Les Grossman, for which there are plans for Cruise to reprise that character in a solo spinoff movie.

Given that the secretive film has wrapped, we likely won’t have to wait too long before Warner Bros. ends up not only dishing details and titling the anticipated Tom Cruise flick as it is set to be released on October 2, 2026, but also starts unleashing promotional materials like stills and footage.
