New Wakanda-Centered ‘Avengers Infinity War’ Spot Teases The End Of The World

The serialized nature of Marvel is a little bit genius, or at the very least, it’s incredible how their prescient gambles pay off. Before “Black Panther” was the monstrous hit it is today—it’s now surpassed “Titanic” at the domestic box office and become the third highest grossing film of all time in the U.S. ($659.5M)—the writers of “Avengers: Infinity War” had already made Wakanda ground zero for their big Thanos movie. So, there’s no need to rejigger the film in the direction of Panther now that the superhero movie is a big hit – a pivot that DC and like-minded studios attempt anytime one element of their films are well-received. Marvel went all in with “Black Panther” from the jump and it should pay off with ‘Infinity War’; the once-hidden African nation, it seems, is where much of the drama will go down.

A new extended trailer for the so-called “greatest crossover event in cinematic history,” features quite a bit of new footage and it leans in hard on Wakanda as the battleground nation for ‘Infinity War,’ perhaps trying to further capitalize on the success of “Black Panther.” Additionally, Marvel is doubling down on the “end of the world” thing which is teased explicitly in this new clip.

Here are a few predictions I have if you care to hear them (nerd alert). First up, Wakanda’s just too powerful—limitless possibilities in medical advancements means no one dies, therefore nothing is at stake, etc.—it’s going to have to be wiped out or at least severely decimated because its technology is just too game changing and it upsets the apple cart of Earth. (Think about it, if that tech is shared, there’s no longer a regular earth and it kind of becomes a new futuristic place) Though I bet they use it to fix Rhodey’s spinal injury and paralysis. Second, Captain America is going down, sorry. He’s the heart and soul of the story so his death becomes the greatest possible dramatic tool in the Russo brother’s arsenal.

OK, that’s for allowing the digression. As for the fate of Wakanda, Fandango actually asked about it. “You know what, I can’t say,” the Russos said. “Let’s just say that it’s Infinity War. Everything’s on the table, including Earth.”

“Avengers Infinity War” opens in U.S. theaters on April 27. Some journalists are being shown about 30 minutes of the film early (see below), but the world won’t hear final verdict, reviews, and tweet opinions until April 24 when all bets are off. No spoilers!

Just saw 25 mins of #AvengersInfinityWar. Can't say much, but it was one hell of a trip seeing Marvel characters from all corners of the universe crossing paths. So much potential for humour, and the @Russo_Brothers milked it for every penny.
