‘Shadow’ Teaser: Zhang Yimou’s Latest Epic Might Be The Most Beautiful Thing You See All Day

Back in April, rumors swirled that Zhang Yimou’s latest film, “Shadow,” was going to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. As you know, the film festival came and went, without “Shadow” making an appearance. Now, we anxiously await a chance to see this film, which is likely going to debut later this year. To hold us over, we have a new teaser for the film.

As you might expect from a film by Yimou, “Shadow” looks absolutely gorgeous. Every scene in the teaser looks like a painting. After watching the footage, you’ll honestly forget all about “The Great Wall” and Matt Damon’s ponytail. It’s that good. Granted, there are no English subtitles, and since I’m not able to speak the language, I was left gawking at the visuals. But seriously, everything about the footage makes my desire to see this film grow tenfold.

If you’ve seen the poster for the film (below), you can see that the director is playing off the yin-yang imagery throughout the film, with the split-screens, and the final shot showing both characters on black and white circles, respectively. Adding to that is the fact that the color palette for the film is almost completely black and white, with the actors’ skin tones being the minimal color seen.

The film is reportedly set in the Three Kingdoms Era of China, approximately 220 – 280. “Shadow” stars Deng Chao, Sun Li, Zheng Kai, and Guan Xiaotong. The film was co-written by Yimou and Wei Li.

There’s no official release date for the film yet, but as we mentioned, its assumed the film will premiere in the fall.
