Got a Tip?

CW Teams With Diablo Cody & Greg Berlanti On Live-Action ‘Powerpuff Girls’ Series

Even if the TV shows at the network aren’t to your liking, there’s no one out there that could argue that CW doesn’t take chances. Before Marvel TV was making all those superhero TV series, CW had already seen “Arrow” become a hit and kickstart a highly successful universe. And who would have thought a sex-charged, moody “Archie” reboot would have worked? Well, CW did and has reaped the benefits with “Riverdale.” Now, the network is hoping its experimentation will continue to pay off with an ambitious reboot of “Powerpuff Girls.”

Yep, you read that right, CW is rebooting “Powerpuff Girls.” But believe us, this is a version of the cartoon characters you’ve never seen before.

According to Variety, CW is teaming up with superstar producer Greg Berlanti and writers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody for a live-action version of the Cartoon Network hit series, “Powerpuff Girls.” Live-action isn’t the only major difference between the CW version and the previous iteration. In the new series, the girls are now twenty-somethings that are disillusioned and upset over the fact that they lost the majority of their childhoods due to their superheroics. And now, with the world needing the Powerpuff Girls yet again, they have to decide whether or not they want to suit up one more time.

Moody, disillusioned youth are what keep CW going, so it makes sense the version of “Powerpuff Girls” the network is interested in is a bit darker than the very bright and silly series. However, fans of that cheery superhero cartoon might be taken aback by what CW is developing. But yet, as mentioned above, if “Riverdale” is any indication, this could be yet another major hit for the youth-skewing network.

And let’s not count out the inclusion of Diablo Cody, either. She’s a great writer that has a ton of acclaim for films like “Juno,” “Jennifer’s Body,” and “Tully.” Regnier, to her credit, is no slouch either, writing and producing on shows such as “iZombie,” “Veronica Mars,” and “SMILF.”

Obviously, it’s too early to tell if CW will actually greenlight the project, but “Powerpuff Girls” has our attention.
