'The Many Saints Of Newark': 'The Sopranos' Prequel Film Is Now Delayed Until September

The long-awaited ‘Sopranos’ prequel film, “The Many Saints of Newark,” was originally supposed to be released last fall. Of course, we know what happened to all the films that were supposed to hit theaters back then. But it appears the most recent date of March 12 isn’t going to happen either, even though the film was shooting for an HBO Max and theatrical release.

According to Variety, it appears that Warner Bros. is moving “The Many Saints of Newark” off of its March 12 date and positioning it on September 24. The move reportedly has nothing to do with any sort of production delays. Apparently, those close to the film believe the move helps put the film in prime festival position and awards season contention. Of course, it probably didn’t help that a lot of other films are pulling out of March/April and WB doesn’t want to lose anymore box office money than it was already going to with its HBO Max move.

As mentioned, “The Many Saints of Newark” is a prequel to the Emmy-winning HBO series, “The Sopranos.” The film brings together David Chase, who wrote and created the series and returns as the screenwriter for the film, and filmmaker Alan Taylor, who also directed quite a number of episodes of the series. ‘Newark’ is set in the ‘60s and follows a younger Tony Soprano (played by original actor James Gandolfini’s son, Michael), as he navigates a tumultuous time where the Italian-American and African-American communities were positioned against each other.

Joining the young Gandolfini in the cast are Alessandro Nivola, Leslie Odom Jr., Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro, Michela De Rossi, Ray Liotta, and Vera Farmiga. Again, it can’t be understated how much buzz is surrounding this film. Not only does it have a strong cast and filmmakers, but it also is the first new ‘Sopranos’ material since the original series ended its run back in 2007.

So, for now, “The Many Saints of Newark” is set to arrive in theaters and HBO Max on September 24.
