Apple TV+ has made quite the name for itself in the realm of film and television in the last year. Still reveling in their Best Picture win at the Academy Awards, their newest foray into TV is the highly anticipated “The Essex Serpent,” which debuts on Friday, May 13, 2022. Ahead of the show’s premiere, we have an exclusive inside look at the series.
“The Essex Serpent,” set in Victorian England, follows Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes), a widow who moves to Aldwinter from London to investigate reports of a mythical serpent. While in Aldwinter, she forms an unlikely bond with the local pastor (Tom Hiddleston), who is trying to contain the anxiety of the parishioners.
“Cora and Will begin an intellectual and ideological debate about faith and reason,” Hiddleston states about the relationship between his character and Danes’. He says they have a “deep mutual admiration and growing passion for each other.”
The series is based on the book of the same name by Sarah Perry and explores the themes of faith and reason. There is an interesting juxtaposition in these themes because, in this story, Cora and science are the representatives of faith, as Cora uses faith in natural science and the work of essential scientists to justify the existence of the Serpent.
“The Essex Serpent” is directed by BAFTA Award-nominee Clio Barnard, written by BAFTA Award-nominee Anna Symon, and stars Clémence Poésy, Frank Dillane, and Hayley Squires alongside Danes and Hiddleston.
