'American Pie' Headed Back To The Big Screen; Joss Whedon and Morgan Spurlock Prep Comic Con Doc & Carla Gugino Joins 'Faster'

Universal is looking to bring “American Pie” back to the big screen. The studio currently has “American Pie 4” in development have been hired Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (“Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle”) to write the script. No word yet if this will try and bring back the original cast members (doubtful) or start anew (more likely) but we imagine it will only be marginally better than the string of straight-to-DVD sequels that the studio has endlessly churned out.

Might as well go ahead and call this one “Super Nerd Me.” Geek hero Joss Whedon and pop documentarian Morgan Spurlock are developing a documentary on the annual nerd convention Comic-Con. The duo are currently looking for three super geeks to follow in the three months leading up to the convention. Spurlock is already familiar with the Comic-Con crowd having attended last year to find fans for his Simpsons documentary “The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special: In 3-D! On Ice!”

Carla Gugino has joined the Dwayne Johnson action vehicle “Faster.” Presumably she is replacing Salma Hayek who left the film earlier this month. In the film about an ex-con who sets out to avenge his brother’s death, Gugino will play “the detective in charge of the investigation, hot on his trail and hell-bent on connecting the killings with a decade-old case.” Billy Bob Thornton and Maggie Grace co-star.

The Ridley and Tony Scott produced television program “Nomads” has been picked up by CW. Created by Ken Sanzel (“Numbers”) the show is about “a group of young backpackers who find a way to make some extra money by doing secret missions for the C.I.A.”

Michael Sucsy, the Emmy and Golden Globe winning director of “Grey Gardens,” has signed on to direct the feature film romance “Vow.” The script by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (“Valentine’s Day”) is “based on a true story about a young woman who loses all recent memory in a car accident and struggles to rebuild her identity while her husband tries to win her heart for the second time.” Sounds like a dramatic version of “50 First Dates.”

IFC has picked up Iranian director Bahman Ghobadi’s latest film “No One Knows About Persian Cats.” We saw the film last year the Festival Du Nouveau Cinema and called it a fascinating and immersive drama about youth and music in Iran.” The film opens in New York on April 16, Los Angeles on April 23 and will be available on VOD at the same time. We highly recommend you check this one out.

Anchor Bay has picked up the North American (and a handful of territories) rights to the remake of the 1978 cult exploitation film “I Spit On Your Grave.” The film, about a woman who is brutally assaulted and raped and then exacts revenge on her attackers, will hit theaters this fall and DVD in early 2011.
