As many, but not all suspected, Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy & The Heron” won the Best Animated Feature Film at the Academy Awards ceremony last night. Largely beloved by critics and audiences, many rejoiced in the win of Miyazaki’s third Oscar when you count his 2015 Honorary Award. However, one of the actors from a rival nominated film wasn’t thrilled about the win. Actor Shameik Moore, who voices Miles Morales in “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse,” took to social media to voice his displeasure with the outcome to his followers and fans.
Moore posted “robbed” on Twitter and followed that up with a more detailed response. “Respect to the winners. It’s true, I’m definitely a sore loser, but we didn’t lose, ‘Spider-Verse’ has impacted A LOT of lives, we may not have been acknowledged tonight but life goes on, and BEYOND…yeah, get ready.”
The poor sportsmanship isn’t great, but the frustration is perhaps somewhat understandable, as ‘Spider-Verse’ was primarily expected to win the prize by most awards pundits. Additionally, “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse” had previously won the award in 2019, so perhaps the sequel was expected to have an even greater shot than the original. Then again, a little perspective wouldn’t hurt Moore. The Japanese animator isn’t exactly unfamiliar to folks at the Academy. Miyazaki previously won the award for “Spirited Away” in 2003, along with nominations for “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “The Wind Rises.”
Meanwhile, producer and co-writer Chris Miller responded with a more congratulatory take, “Well, if you’re gonna lose, might as well lose to the GOAT.” Referring to Miyazaki as the “greatest of all time.”
“Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse” could have another shot at the award after audiences whenever the third installment when it hits the big screen. Currently, Sony Pictures has removed it from their slate after it was once etched in for March 29, 2024. It is expected in 2025, but in recent interviews with the directors, they wouldn’t commit to a date, timeframe, or even year.
