William Gibson published “Neuromancer” in 1984, and Hollywood has spent the four decades since borrowing from it while repeatedly failing to adapt the actual book. Its clearest cinematic descendant is Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski’s “The Matrix,” which owes a major debt to Gibson’s hackers, artificial intelligence, corporate dystopia, and shared digital reality.

Unveiled during San Diego Comic-Con, the new trailer offers the first substantial look at Apple TV’s ten-episode adaptation. Callum Turner (“Masters of the Air”) stars as Case, a damaged hacker recruited for a dangerous job, while Briana Middleton (“Sharper”) plays Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes. Together, they become entangled in digital espionage and a plan targeting a powerful corporate dynasty.
The series was created by Graham Roland (“Dark Winds”) and JD Dillard (“Devotion”), with Roland serving as showrunner and Dillard directing the pilot. The cast also includes Joseph Lee, Mark Strong, Clémence Poésy, Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Laird, Dane DeHaan, Max Irons, André De Shields, Marc Menchaca, Isabella Pappas, and Prasanna Puwanarajah.
Gibson’s debut novel won the Hugo, Nebula, and Philip K. Dick awards and launched the Sprawl trilogy, followed by “Count Zero” and “Mona Lisa Overdrive.” Its mix of hackers, artificial intelligence, body modification, multinational corporations, and urban decay helped define cyberpunk, influencing everything from “The Matrix” to “Ghost in the Shell.”
The book’s enormous influence also gives Apple a difficult job. Audiences have already spent decades watching science fiction descended from “Neuromancer,” even if they have never read it. Meanwhile, direct movie adaptations from filmmakers including Chris Cunningham, Vincenzo Natali, and Tim Miller all failed to reach the screen.
Announced today at Comic-Con, “Neuromancer” premieres January 22, 2027 on Apple TV. Watch the trailer below.
