While the film side of things is heating up with a spread of summer blockbusters, television is offering a more reliable stream of new releases and highly anticipated returns. July brings not one, but two spinoff series based on popular comedies, a new take on a television and literary classic, a handful of all-star ensembles, and a streaming-heavy lineup with only a few cable premieres. With some of the biggest, buzziest titles behind us as series such as “Widows Bay” have ended, it’s time to see what might fill the conversation next.
More often than not these days, that conversation involves an Apple TV+ drama. Fans of the sci-fi dystopian series “Silo” should have plenty to dig into as the story pushes further into the mystery of its world, while Anya Taylor-Joy returns to television for her first series lead role since the Emmy-winning “The Queen’s Gambit.” Elsewhere, Emmy Rossum and Jennifer Garner are among the bigger names heading back to the small screen.
From mutant nostalgia and unlikely threats to the universe to the return of Elle Woods, a grief-soaked vacation getaway, and globe-trotting con artists, here’s what’s worth checking out in July.
“Elle”
A spinoff prequel to the Reese Witherspoon-starring “Legally Blonde,” “Elle” follows Elle Woods before Harvard Law, when she’s still enduring the anxieties, indignities, and social warfare of high school. Created by Laura Kittrell and starring Lexi Minetree, the series follows Elle as she moves from her L.A. home to Seattle and navigates the shock of a new environment. Already greenlit for Season 2, the series also stars June Diane Raphael, Tom Everett Scott, Jacob Moskovitz, Gabrielle Policano, Chandler Kinney, Zac Looker, and Amy Pietz.
Release Date: Season 1 premieres July 1 on Prime Video.
“X-Men ’97”
Marvel’s acclaimed animated revival returns for Season 2 after its first season turned a nostalgia play into one of the studio’s most beloved recent projects. Picking up the legacy of “X-Men: The Animated Series,” “X-Men ’97” continues the story of the mutant team as they face new threats, fractured allegiances, and the political and emotional fallout of protecting a world that still fears them.
Release Date: Season 2 premieres July 1 on Disney+.
“Silo”
The Apple TV+ dystopian series “Silo” returns for its third season. Rebecca Ferguson stars as Juliette, a woman living in a future where civilization has been forced underground. Created by Graham Yost and based on Hugh Howey’s book series, Season 3 looks to dig deeper into the truth about what the silo really is as others begin to uncover a larger conspiracy. Common, Harriet Walter, Chinaza Uche, Avi Nash, Alexandria Riley, Shane McRae, Remmie Milner, Rick Gomez, Billy Postlethwaite, and Clare Perkins return, with Jessica Henwick and Ashley Zukerman joining the cast.
Release Date: Season 3 premieres July 3 on Apple TV+.
