‘Fjord’ Trailer: Sebastian Stan & Renate Reinsve Face A Moral Reckoning In Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or Winner

Cristian Mungiu’s Cannes-winning drama follows a Romanian-Norwegian family whose rigid beliefs collide with a coastal community’s suspicions.

The fall festival corridor is about to get a heavy dose of “Fjord.” NEON has released a new trailer for Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or-winning drama. With an October 9 theatrical release now set, the film is moving from Cannes lightning rod to one of the season’s key international awards contenders. The film stars Renate Reinsve as a Norwegian woman and Sebastian Stan as her devout Romanian husband, who relocate with their five children to a remote, close-knit coastal town.

Their teenage children quickly form a bond with a neighboring family, but unease begins to simmer around the couple’s rigid beliefs. When allegations of abuse emerge, the family is forced to confront a system of judgment that blurs the line between legitimate concern and cultural prejudice.

That tension has only made “Fjord” more of a conversation piece since Cannes. The film will screen at TIFF and the New York Film Festival, where it is part of the Spotlight section. Telluride has not announced its lineup yet, but given the film’s Cannes win, NEON release date, and fall-festival positioning, it would hardly be a surprise to see it surface there, too.

Mungiu, who previously won the Palme d’Or for “4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days,” has framed “Fjord” as a drama about moral certainty on both sides of a cultural divide. After the Cannes win, he told the Associated Press, “Today the society is split. It’s divided. It’s radicalized,” adding that the film is “a pledge against any type of fundamentalism.”

Stan, meanwhile, has spoken about the project as a return to his Romanian roots. “I left in a very chaotic way, and I’ve really tried to educate myself about the country,” he told Reuters at Cannes, describing “Fjord” as a chance “to rebond” with the country of his birth. Reinsve also told Reuters the role was “very scary” because she had to play “someone who was doing something wrong and was violent without knowing it.”

The supporting cast includes Lisa Carlehed, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Henrikke Lund-Olsen, and Vanessa Ceban. Mungiu writes and directs, with Tudor Vladimir Panduru serving as cinematographer, Kaspar Kaae composing the score, and Mircea Olteanu editing.

The Playlist reviewed “Fjord” out of Cannes, calling it a “fascinating yet flawed” drama that tackles “family, society, faith, abuse, punishment, and community,” while praising Stan and Reinsve’s understated performances.

NEON is giving “Fjord” an October 9 theatrical release, just after its NYFF bow and in the same fall corridor where the distributor has often launched major Cannes titles. Watch the trailer below.
