‘A Family Affair’ Trailer: Nicole Kidman Hooks Up With Zac Efron In An Awkward New Sex Comedy

You don’t want your professional life with your personal life, and you certainly don’t want your mom involved, or worse, sleeping with your boss. And that’s the wild and basic premise of “A Family Affair,” an outrageous new Netflix sex comedy, love story, and family dramedy that stars Nicole Kidman, Joey King, and Zac Efron.

Directed by Richard LaGravenese (“P.S. I Love You” “Freedom Writers”), “A Family Affair” stars Joey King (“The Kissing Booth”) as Zara, the frazzled and underappreciated assistant to narcissistic movie star Chris Cole (Zac Efron, “The Iron Claw”). Just when Zara has reached her breaking point with the low-rung job and her sh*tty, self-involved boss, she discovers that her mother, a recent widow (Nicole Kidman), has begun a romantic affair with her celebrity boss. Suffice it to say, this makes Zara deeply enraged, and yet, the film has a sense of complexity to it as the young woman must balance her own personal needs with her mom’s sense of burgeoning happiness.

The film will also feature Kathy Bates, Liza Koshy, and Shirley MacLaine in supporting roles, and it’s something of a reunion for Kidman and Efron, who starred together as lovers in 2014’s “The Paperboy” by director Lee Daniels.

Here is the official synopsis from Netflix:

Work as the assistant to super mega movie star, Chris Cole, a demanding and womanizing narcissist, is beginning to take its toll on Zara. On an impulse she quits her job, only to soon discover that her widowed mother has begun a romance with the famous playboy.

LaGravenese knows the romance and rom-com genre well, having written films like “The Bridges of Madison County,” “Behind the Candelabra,” and directed movies like “The Last Five Years.” “A Family Affair” is the filmmaker’s first feature-length directorial effort since 2014, but LaGravenese has kept himself busy writing screenplays like Angelina Jolie’sUnbroken” (2014) and 2022’s “Disenchanted” starring Amy Adams.

“A Family Affair” will begin to stream on Netflix on June 28. Watch the first trailer below.
