A new version of “The Mummy” is on the horizon from New Line Cinema as filmmaker Lee Cronin is teaming up with Blumhouse, and James Wans‘ production company Atomic Monster for the new horror pic.
A rather big casting announcement has been made as Irish actor Jack Reynor (“The Perfect Couple”) has joined the mysterious project according to a new casting announcement from The Hollywood Reporter. The outlet adds that Reynor, who nearly nabbed the role of Han Solo in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” “is playing a husband and father who runs afoul of supernaturally sinister forces.”
“The Mummy” had once been seen as an important notch in the Universal Monsters belt at Universal Pictures as a high-profile remake starring Tom Cruise was going to launch an interactive cinematic universe referred to as “The Dark Universe” (that title had some legal hiccups with DC Comics) with actors such as Russell Crowe (Dr. Jekeyll and Mr. Hyde), Javier Bardem (Frankenstein’s Monster), Angelina Jolie (The Bride of Frankenstein), and Johnny Depp (The Invisible Man) expected to play monstrous parts alongside Cruise.
However, when “The Mummy” alongside “Dracula: Untold” (which was going to be retroactively added to The Dark Universe) struggled at the box office, Universal looked to mega-producer Jason Blum and Blumhouse to help reconfigure the franchise with efforts like Leigh Whannell‘s “The Invisible Man” and their most recent theatrical offering, “Wolf Man.”
Given the working relationship between Universal and Blumhouse on horror films, it’s a little odd to see the latter working on a rival project at another studio. Then again, horror movie concepts aren’t always relegated to rights held by specific studios, but Universal was behind the classic debut of the iconic monster back in 1932 and a revival in the late 1990s starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz.
Reynor is likely best known for roles in films such as Ari Aster’s Swedish-set folk horror film “Midsommar,” Kathryn Bigelow‘s “Detroit,” the wacky action comedy “Free Fire” alongside Oscar-winners Cillian Murphy and Brie Larson, and a supporting role in Michael Bay‘s “Transformers: Age of Extinction.”
Filming on “The Mummy” is expected to begin soon in scenic Ireland, and Warner Bros. has already set the release for April 17, 2026.
