Andrew Haigh, the acclaimed filmmaker behind “All of Us Strangers” and “45 Years,” is back with their latest effort, “A Long Winter.” Thankfully, we can share some first-look images from the new movie that is being distributed by the fine folks over at MUBI. The main group of talented actors recruited for lead roles includes Fred Hechinger (“Gladiator II”), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear,” “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”), Caitríona Balfe (“Belfast,” “Ford v Ferrari,” “Outlander”), Kit Connor (“Heartstopper,” “Warfare,” “Rocketman”), and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (“Warfare,” “Reservation Dogs”).
Others among the cast of “A Long Winter” include Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (“The Lincoln Lawyer”), David Furr (“The Gilded Age”), and Martin Freeman (“Black Panther,” “The Hobbit” trilogy).
A brief synopsis for the new film as provided by MUBI, which is an adaptation by Haigh of Colm Tóibín‘s short story:
Set in the mountains as autumn draws to a close and a family prepares for the long winter ahead.
Another interesting tidbit about the upcoming pic is that it was primarily shot on location in Alberta, Canada, with a fantastic creative team including cinematographer André Turpin (“Mommy,” “Incendies”), production designer Emmanuel Fréchette (“Wayward,” “The North Water”), and Haigh reuniting with editor Jonathan Alberts (“All of Us Strangers,” “45 Years”).
The film is produced by Tristan Goligher for The Bureau, Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev for the Calgary-based Nomadic Pictures, and Michael Elliott. It was originally developed by MUBI and is co-financed by both MUBI and Film4.
“A Long Winter” will be screening at the New York Film Festival this fall and will have its Canadian debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, so we won’t have to wait too much longer to hear critical reviews of Haigh’s latest project. You can view those new images below.
