Most romance films typically center around young love and growing old together. Less common are stories about finding love at an older age or simply being older and in love. But isn’t a romance story romantic regardless of whatever age one finds love? Max Walker-Silverman thinks so, and his film “A Love Song” proves it.

“A Love Song” tells the story of retired Forest Service flier Faye (Dale Dickey) as she waits alone for an old flame from her past (Wes Studi) to arrive at a campsite. She’s uncertain of his intentions and simultaneously bashful about her own. That tension only grows as the pair navigates between being both old friends nostalgic for the past and strangers who haven’t been in each other’s lives for fifty years. If anything, Walker-Silverman’s film shows that having a crush remains the same awkward, riveting, and intense emotion whether paths cross in high school or in life’s golden year.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
Colorado campground as she awaits the arrival of Lito (Wes Studi), a figure from her past who is navigating his own tentative and nomadic journey across the rugged West. Like the country music that has traditionally channeled the heartbreak and resilience of Americans in search of themselves and others. A Love Song weaves a lyrical and ultimately joyful refrain out of the transformative act of being alone–and reminds us that love can nourish and mystify at any age.
Walker-Silverman writes and directs “A Love Song,” his debut feature film. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year where audiences met with a warm reception. And that reception has continued, as it’s the most played and awarded indie film on the festival circuit this year.
“A Love Song” premieres in theatres on July 29, 2022. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.
