While the title might seem generic and unassuming, “A Teacher” might be one of the most controversial TV series to come around in quite some time. The series tackles the issues of sexual abuse against a student by a teacher and not only shows the nitty, gritty of the actual sexual encounters but also the ramifications of the abuse. And due to the sensitive nature of the series, FX has gone ahead and released a PSA to go along with the new trailer for the show.
Hannah Fidell’s upcoming series is based on her own film of the same name and tells the story of a female teacher that begins a horrible affair with a male student. Though the male student claims that its love, the truth ruins the lives of everyone involved. And in the accompanying PSA that joins the new trailer, star Kate Mara explains that the abuse is all too common and must be taken very seriously. It’s clear that FX is trying to get ahead of any sort of controversy the series might bring, especially with its release date just a month away.
The series stars Kate Mara, Nick Robinson, Ashley Zukerman, Marielle Scott, Shane Harper, and Adam David Thompson. As mentioned, “A Teacher” is the rare example of a feature film getting adapted for TV from the same writer-director. Hannah Fidell takes the story that helped her break out almost a decade ago and adapts it for TV with the help of FX and Hulu.
“A Teacher” is set to debut on November 10 on FX on Hulu. You can watch both the trailer and the PSA below.
Here’s the synopsis:
A Teacher follows Claire Wilson (Kate Mara), a young teacher at a suburban Texas high school and her student, Eric Walker (Nick Robinson) as they navigate the complexities and consequences of a predatory relationship.
