After some delays and speculation about when we might be able to see James Gray’s latest film, “Ad Astra” is just a month away. The filmmaker’s sci-fi epic is one of the most anticipated films of the fall and could be an awards contender. It’s also a film that IMAX is hoping puts some butts in seats.
Fox has just released a new IMAX trailer for “Ad Astra,” and as you have probably seen in the others, this ad shows the basic plot of the film. But instead of being a quiet, contemplative look at the sci-fi film, which sees Brad Pitt play an astronaut that has to go out to the further reaches of our solar system to discover the truth about his father’s legacy, the IMAX trailer tells you that but laces the footage with plenty of action to let audiences know that this is an event that you’re going to want to see on the biggest possible screen.

And judging by the trailer, “Ad Astra” looks absolutely stunning and worth all the extra time needed by Gray to perfect the special effects. Much like films such as “Gravity” and “Interstellar,” “Ad Astra” seemingly does an incredible job of showing how beautiful space travel can be while also letting audiences realize how scary and unforgiving it is. Even if Gray isn’t able to knock this one out of the park, it would appear that he’s at least made a beautiful film.
Joining Pitt in the film are Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland. As mentioned, the film is directed by Gray, who also co-wrote the film alongside Ethan Gross.
James Gray’s “Ad Astra” arrives in theaters on September 20.
Here’s the synopsis:
Astronaut Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet. His journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos.
