We’ve all been curious how Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu would top his previous entries, and there seems to be a shimmer of light to what his next feature film could be about after a long drought concerning plot details.
Mexican outlet El Universal (via The Film Stage) has set photos and potential details concerning the filmmaker’s follow-up to the 2015 Oscar-winning survival film “The Revenant” that helped Leonardo DiCaprio finally secure his Best Actor Oscar. The film, titled “Limbo,” is reportedly said to include elements or feature battles from the Mexican-American War, historical events that are rarely explored in modern Hollywood projects.
Their set photos reveal a replica of the Chapultepec Castle, which was the setting for the Battle of Chapultepec in 1847, a key battle during the Mexican-American War. However, The Film Stage theorizes there could be some time-jumping involved as other set photos towards a more modern setting.
Actors Daniel Giménez Cacho (“Zama“), Leonardo Alonso (“Sin Nombre“), and Andrés Almeida (“Y tu mamá también“) are said to have roles in new film.
Iñárritu has been behind such arresting films as “21 Grams,” “Babel,” “Biutiful,” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” and the aforementioned “The Revenant.”
The filmmaker is known for his breathtaking visuals and there is confirmation he’ll be working alongside French-Iranian cinematographer Darius Khondji on “Limbo,” whose impressive credits include David Fincher‘s “Se7en,” The Safdie Brothers‘ “Uncut Gems,” Boon Joo-ho‘s “Okja,” James Gray‘s “The Lost City of Z,” and most recently worked on the Apple TV+ series “Lisey’s Story” based on the Stephen King novel.
It’s unclear when we’ll get an official glimpse of “Limbo,” but there is a strong possibility it’ll make the festival circuit rounds before it lands a limited or wide release domestically in the United States.
