'Limbo': Alejandro González Iñárritu Next Film Features Cinematographer Darius Khondji & 'Zama' Star Daniel Giménez Cacho

When a filmmaker like four-time Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu (a two-time Best Director winner and nine-time nominee total; plus a Special Achievement Academy Award for the VR film “Flesh and Sand“) makes a new film, the world, and the trades generally know about it first. But like Alfonso Cuaron, who made “Roma” away from the Hollywood system, when someone like Iñárritu makes a film in his native Mexico, it usually goes somewhat uncovered by the American media for months. Thus, it’s the LA Times‘ Spanish-language arm that has broken news of Iñárritu’s new film.

Tentatively titled “Limbo,” at least for now, the film is a drama that stars Daniel Giménez Cacho, known for starring in Lucrecia Martel’s critically-acclaimed “Zama.” It also features some craft heavyweights, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer, the Iranian Darius Khondji, known for David Fincher’s “Se7en,” “Delicatessen” and James Gray’sThe Immigrant,”), as well as the Academy Award-winning art director, Eugenio Caballero (“Pan’s Labyrinth,” Roma,” and “A Monster Calls”).

The Times describes the film as a kind of fable that exposes a vision of the filmmaker and producer about Mexico’s political and social modernity. Khondji is regarded as one of the best cinematographers in the world, and he teaming up with Iñárritu for the first time, who usually uses cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (“Birdman” and most of the director’s films), is exciting and bold new territory for the Mexican filmmaker (two of Lubezki’s three Oscars come from working with Iñárritu, the second for “The Revenant“). Khondji is also known for working with Wong Kar Wai, Woody Alen, Bong Joon-ho, and he most recently shot “Uncut Gems” (fun fact, he was the original DP of Fincher’s “Panic Room,” but was either fired or walked away due to creative differences with the filmmaker).

The film just started shooting, and apparently, The Mexico City Filming Commission refused to provide details, But the paper confirmed that “Limbo” is the first large-scale feature film to return to this country, after filming was paused due to the pandemic. Cannes 2022? Fingers crossed.
