Got a Tip?

Alex Garland Says “Serious Conversations” Are Happening About ’28 Months Later’

28 Weeks Later"… it’s very difficult to know whether zombies are overexposed now as a concept. So it’s 40/60 whether it happens or not. But we did have an idea of where to set it and what it might be about," Danny Boyle teased nearly two years ago about the possibility of a follow-up to "28 Weeks Later." But evidently one idea that isn’t overexposed in Hollywood are franchises, so it’s not a total surprise that the idea of a third installment in the trilogy (the first film was directed by Boyle, the second produced by the filmmaker and helmed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo) hasn’t faded away.

Chatting with IGN, Alex Garland (screenwriter of ’28 Days’ and producer of ’28 Weeks’) reveals the undead franchise is back on the table. “We’ve just started talking about it seriously” he said. “We’ve got an idea. Danny [Boyle] and [producer] Andrew [Macdonald] and I have been having quite serious conversations about it, so it is a possibility. It’s complicated."

We’d wager there might be studio hurdles to clear before this happens, not to mention that Boyle will be busy gearing up to shoot the Steve Jobs biopic soon (though we presume he’ll just be producing the zombie movie anyway). As for Garland, he says he’d likely be back in a producing capacity as well, but confirms "28 Months Later" is the likely title.

So, should this happen? Who should direct? Let us know below. Garland’s "Ex Machina" arrives stateside on April 10th.
