Amazon Teams With ‘You’re Next’ Filmmaker Adam Wingard On New ‘Event Horizon’ Series

Event Horizon” is one of those films that seems to have developed a cult audience over the years, but never really is thought of as a “classic” horror film. The sci-fi/horror film from 1997 features a great cast with Laurence Fishburne and Sam Neill and a fairly unique story about space travel and hell dimensions but is far from perfect. That being said, there’s enough meat on the bone, so to speak, that Amazon is willing to flesh it out into a new streaming series.

Variety is reporting that Amazon has hired filmmaker Adam Wingard to bring “Event Horizon” to its Prime Video streaming service as a new horror series. As mentioned, the series will be based on the film of the same name and will tell the story of the mysterious return of a spaceship after traveling through a man-made black hole. When another ship goes to investigate what happened, they find that the Event Horizon ship actually traveled to a horrific alternate dimension.

Wingard is probably best known as the writer-director of films like the “Blair Witch” reboot, “You’re Next,” “The Guest,” and “Death Note.” He is also the man behind the upcoming “Godzilla vs. Kong” film, which is set to debut in 2020. As you can probably judge based on his filmography, Wingard is clearly a fan of horror and isn’t afraid of a high concept like “Event Horizon.”

The development of the series is also proof that Amazon is definitely not backing down from Netflix, Apple, Disney, Universal, and WarnerMedia in the streaming wars. The tech company has the cash to spend on expensive streaming projects like “Event Horizon” and will gladly do so to keep people subscribed to its Prime service.

No word yet on when “Event Horizon” might debut on the service.
