Andrew Lloyd Webber Really Didn't Like James Corden's "Unfunny" Acting In 'Cats'

Remember December of last year, when the biggest story that the film industry was concerned with was the botched release of Tom Hooper’sCats?” Those were simpler times. Well, even though the world is seemingly coming apart and spiraling into a pit of awful, Andrew Lloyd Webber, the writer of the Broadway show, “Cats,” is here to remind us that the 2019 film is truly terrible.

Recently, Webber held a live commentary for the filmed stage version of “Cats” (via CinemaBlend), and during that recording, the writer slipped in a couple of jabs at Tom Hooper’s version of the story that was shown in the 2019 box office bomb. Specifically, when it came to the character of Bustopher Jones, played by James Corden in the film.

“Bustopher without interruption, as I wrote it,” said the writer, while commenting on the stage version of the show. “Do not be beguiled by other versions. Other versions with unfunny interpolations which I begged to be cut out. I did manage to get the worst of them removed. I cannot tell you how absolutely un-Eliot it all was in this song.”

To further drive home the point about which “version” he’s talking about, he added, “He certainly didn’t hang around on a seesaw.”

Cleary, his not-so-subtle criticisms are in regards to the film that was released in December and quickly became the laughing stock of the film industry for its shoddy VFX work, its ridiculous story, and its misguided casting, among many, many other issues.

And while you might expect Webber to perhaps defend his work, in whatever version it is shown, it’s obvious that the writer’s standards are a bit higher than what was released by Universal. “Cats” is available now wherever you find movies, both good and bad.
