Celebrating Kino Lorber's New Blu-Ray Release Of Andrey Zvyagintsev's First Film, 'The Return' [Podcast]

Welcome to a new edition of The Playlist Podcast, a discussion about film news and other film and television related items. Erik from AYT here, and on this episode I’m joined by regular PP host Ryan Oliver and Over/Under Movies creator Oktay Ege Kozak. We’re hoping to do more of these episodes, and also looking at re-formatting Over/Under Movies so we can stay more consistent at The Playlist Podcast Network.

On this episode, we’re mostly here to discuss “The Return,” the confidently made and tense-as-hell 2003 feature debut by Russian master Andrey Azvyagintsev (“Loveless,” “Leviathan“). The film was well-reviewed when it came out, but seems lesser known in his filmography as he’s become a canonical great modern director over the last 15 years. (No argument here.) And with Kino Lorber‘s recent blu-ray releases of it and his second effort, “The Banishment” (arguably the least seen of all his works), now’s the time to talk about it on the podcast. Previously, Zeitgeist has released a Christopher Nolan-approved blu-ray of Zvjagintsev’s film “Elena,” so it’s exciting to see these films in great transfers. The first 25 minutes of the show are dedicated to us catching up on new stuff we’ve seen lately, on home video or at the theaters. The rest is all about despairing modern Russian cinema, yeah!
