While the heyday of Anne Rice might be behind her, the author’s “The Vampire Chronicles” endure and continue to capture the imagination. All that being said, they haven’t had the best track record in Hollywood. The most famous adaptation, of course, is 1994’s “Interview With A Vampire” starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, and probably the less said the better about 2002’s “Queen Of The Damned.” A few years back, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (“Fringe,” “Star Trek,” “Transformers”) were going to bring the fourth book in the saga, “The Tale Of The Body Thief,” to the big screen, but that went nowhere. Now, the property is back in Rice’s hands and she has her own plans for her vampire tale.

“The theatrical rights to the ‘Vampire Chronicles’ are once again in my hands, free and clear! I could not be more excited about this!” the author announced this weekend on Facebook. “A television series of the highest quality is now my dream for Lestat, Louis, Armand, Marius and the entire tribe. In this the new Golden Age of television, such a series is THE way to let the entire story of the vampires unfold.”
Can’t really argue with that logic in how to approach to the dozen-plus books-deep source material, but it’s a long journey to get a TV show made, and few of them become the mega-sized hit that this would require to really do everything justice the way Rice wants. Still, with Rice deeply involved as an executive producer and working on the pilot script with her son, Christopher Rice, they’ll make sure the fans get what they want.
