Got a Tip?

Approximately 50 U.S. Theaters Are Being Geared Up To Show Quentin Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful Eight’ In 70mm

The Hateful EightA new film from Quentin Tarantino is usually an event all by itself, but as we know, with "The Hateful Eight" he’s hoping to deliver the kind of cinematic experience audiences haven’t had on a grand scale in quite some time, by promising to present the movie in 70mm. His pal Paul Thomas Anderson beat him to the punch for the idea a few years back with "The Master," but 70mm screenings were largely at special events or in the few cinemas that still had the projection capabilities. However, Tarantino is working to ensure "The Hateful Eight" will have a few more screens to show the movie as he intended.

THR reports that they’re hearing Panavision is working to equip approximately 50 U.S. cinemas so that they show "The Hateful Eight" in 70mm. "He really wants to get people back into theaters. You’re not going to get this [at home]. He did something really great to bring that [experience] back," Panavision’s VP of optical engineering Dan Sasaki said at Cine Gear Expo. "Quentin wanted an epic Western, something that hasn’t been seen in forever, that would really wow people. [When he saw this test,] he started bouncing in his seat."

And if Tarantino is enthused, well, so are we. Also, to get a little taste of what’s coming, cinematographer Bill Bennett who attended the expo tweeted one of the test shots highlighting just what the Ultra Panavision 70 lenses are capturing. Check it out below (via Rope Of Silicon).
