The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the production of most major films for more than two months now. We’re just now beginning to see that places like California and European countries are expected to be allow for filming in the weeks to come. And though we still haven’t heard about when films such as “The Matrix 4,” “The Batman,” and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” will start work again, we’re getting a better idea of when James Cameron’s “Avatar 2” will resume in New Zealand.

Producer Jon Landau shared an update on Instagram, with a picture of the set construction and a message, “Our #Avatar sets are ready — and we couldn’t be more excited to be headed back to New Zealand next week. Check out the Matador, a high speed forward command vessel (bottom) and the Picador jetboat (top) — can’t wait to share more.”
So, while the rest of the world attempts to reopen, including countries where major films are being shot, such as in Europe and the US, it appears that New Zealand is ready to go, and James Cameron can get back to work bringing the world of Pandora alive once again.
Just recently, the filmmaker talked about the production delay, and though he seemed bummed that the production was suddenly halted, it’s been over a decade since the first film was released. So, even if Cameron is frustrated by the pandemic, what’s the problem with waiting a few extra months? If fans are clamoring for an “Avatar” sequel (let alone 4 of them) a decade later, we’re confident they can wait a little while longer.
As of now, “Avatar 2” is set to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2021.
