BAFTA Awards Move To April 2021 As Awards Dominoes Begin To Fall

Are you part of an organization that traditionally has an event that leads up to the Academy Awards? Well, now that the Oscars have moved to April 25, 2021, you might want to jump on a new date quickly as available slots are moving fast. Within an hour of the Academy’s announcement, their British counterparts revealed the 2021 BAFTA Awards will take place on Sunday, April 11, 2021.

The 2020 BAFTAs occurred on Feb. 2, 2020, just a week before the Academy Awards. The 2021 ceremony was originally set for February 14, 2021. As you’d expect, the British Academy noted that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the extended eligibility for the Oscars facilitated the change. It is possible the date for the 2022 awards, currently earmarked for February 2020, will also find a new date.

BAFTA will also release a new timeline and rules for eligibility at a later date.

Other awards ceremonies expected to shift their dates include the Golden Globes, the Independent Spirit Awards (traditionally the Saturday before the Oscars), the Gotham Awards as well as guild honors such as the SAG Awards, DGA Awards and PGA Awards. In theory, the 63rd Grammy Awards are still set for January 31, 2021.

At this point, it’s also unclear if major critics groups will hold off on announcing winners for the calendar year in December or push to a later date.
