'Peninsula' Trailer: 'Train To Busan' Sequel Dials Up The Action

When it was released four years ago, “Train to Busan” became a fan-favorite in the world of horror due to its unique take on the zombie genre. Due to the massive success of “The Walking Dead,” the zombie genre quickly became oversaturated and it felt like fans had seen everything. But ‘Busan’ was different. And now, the film’s sequel, “Peninsula,” looks to once again expand the zombie genre in a new direction.

As seen in the trailer for “Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula” (Yeah, it’s a bit of a mouthful), the footage gives a great look at what is sure to be one of the biggest horror releases of the year. The film takes place four years after the first film and follows the story of a group of people that are commissioned with the job of going into the zombie-infested lands and recovering a prize worth millions of dollars. As you might expect, things aren’t as simple as that and they are introduced to a whole underground society that has survived in the plague. The vibe of the trailer brings to mind films such as “Mad Max” and “Hobbs & Shaw.”

And while referencing the recent ‘Fast & Furious’ spin-off might seem like a backhanded compliment, “Peninsula” is clearly taking a more ‘Fast & Furious’ approach to the original film. If “Train to Busan” worked primarily because of its claustrophobic setting and the emotional bonds felt between the characters, “Peninsula” seems to be going the opposite route, focused on the spectacle and the over-the-top action. Half-way through the trailer, you fully expect to see Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson show up.

That being said, the trailer is exciting and fun. And if you’re concerned about the new sequel, keep in mind that “Peninsula” is helmed by Yeon Sang-Ho, who directed the first film.

“Peninsula” was recently selected as part of the now-canceled Cannes Film Festival. You can watch the trailer below:
