'The Favourite' Leads All 2019 BAFTA Awards Nominees With 12

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced the nominees for the 2019 EE BAFTA Awards early Wednesday morning and their clear cut favorite was Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite.”  The Fox Searchlight and Film 4 production earned 12 nods including Best Film, Director (Lanthimos), Lead Actress (Olivia Colman), Original Screenplay and two Supporting Actress nods (Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz), among others.  “Roma” landed seven nods including Best Film, Best Director (Alfonso Cuaron), Original Screenplay (Cuaron) and Editing (Cuaron), among others.

Both “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “A Star is Born” also earned seven nods.  The former was shut out of Best Film while the later earned Director (Bradley Cooper), Best Actress (Lady Gaga) ad aBest Film nod, but missed out on Editing.  Only “The Favourite” and Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma” landed Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing nominations. They are likely in the driver’s seat to take Best Film.

Among other pictures, “Vice” landed six nominations, but Adam McKay was shut out of Director. Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” earned five nods including Best Film and Best Director.  “Green Book” took four nominations including Best Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (Viggo Mortensen) and Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali).  “Cold War” surprised with four nods including Best Director (Paweł Pawlikowski), Best Original Screenplay (Pawlikowski), Best Cinematography and Film Not In The English Language.

It’s worth noting not all of the Oscar contenders qualify for BAFTA’s version of Foreign Language Film due to release dates, but contenders “Roma,” “Cold War,” “Capernaum” and “Shoplifters” joined “Dogman,” which didn’t make the Academy’s shortlist. “Burning” did not qualify.

Other films that failed to qualify include “At Eternity’s Gate,” “Ben is Back” and “Eighth Grade.”  Contenders that did not feel the love from the other side of the pond included “Black Panther” (just one nod for Visual Effects), “Mary Poppins Returns” (three below-the-line nods with star Emily Blunt snubbed) and “If Beale Street Could Talk.”  Barry Jenkins took an Adapted Screenplay nod for “Beale” and Nicholas Britell earned an Original Music nomination, but Golden Globe winner Regina King was once again missing (the first was with SAG last month).  King is likely still on tap for an Oscar nomination, but it may put “The Favourite’s” Stone or Weisz in the driver’s seat for the win.  Sam Elliott was also a surprise snub in Supporting Actor for “A Star is Born”

The BAFTA is always full of surprises and their well-deserved recognition of Viola Davis for “Widows” over Blunt and “Roma’s” Yalitza Aparicio in Leading Actress was telling.  Like all the guild honors before it, BAFTA does not always line up with the Oscars, but a large number of their 6,500 members are also in the Academy.  You can easily deduce the major films to watch out for then after scouring the list below.

The 2019 EE BAFTA Awards will be handed out on Feb. 10 in London.
