In 2017, Spanish filmmaker Alberto Corredor made the acclaimed horror short “Baghead,” a ghost story about a man who is haunted by grief and has questions that only the recently deceased can answer. And now, well, Corredor is remaking the film for Studio Canal as a full-blown feature from The Picture Company producers Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman (“Come Play”) and Vertigo’s Roy Lee, who produced “It” and “Barbarian.”

“Baghead” won over 30 awards during its run on the festival circuit. It revolves around a mysterious figure called Baghead, a diminutive, wrinkled-up person who can briefly manifest the dead and bring them back to our world. People seek out the mysterious medium to reconnect with lost loved ones. However, once in contact with Baghead, the title character’s true powers and intentions are revealed, and there is a high price to pay for its contact with the deceased.
The feature version will expand on that storyline and take a “Saw” approach by including supernatural elements. Freya Allan (“The Witcher”), Peter Mullan, Saffron Burrows, Jeremy Irvine (“War Horse”), Ned Dennehy, Ruby Barker, and Julika Jenkin (“Vitus”) star in this new version.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Following the death of her estranged father (Peter Mullan), Iris (Freya Allan) learns she has inherited a run-down, centuries-old pub. She travels to Berlin to identify her father’s body and meet with The Solicitor (Ned Dennehy) to discuss the estate. Little does she know, when the deed is signed, she will become inextricably tied to an unspeakable entity that resides in the pub’s basement – Baghead – a shape-shifting creature that can transform into the dead. Two thousand in cash for two minutes with the beast is all it takes for desperate loved ones to ease their grief. Neil (Jeremy Irvine), who has lost his wife, is Iris’ first customer. Like her father, Iris is tempted to exploit the creature’s powers and help desperate people for a price. But she soon discovers breaking the two-minute rule can have terrifying consequences. Together with her best friend Katie (Ruby Barker), Iris must battle to keep control of Baghead and figure out how to destroy her before she destroys them.
“Baghead” looks as creepy as the original and surely will only improve upon the short that birthed the original idea. The horror lands in U.K. theaters TBD January, 2024. Watch the first trailer below.
