It has been six years since the last film from director Trey Edward Shults. Now 36, Shults broke out ten years ago with his SXSW debut “Krisha,” which firmly planted him on the map as a filmmaker to watch. Shults’ last film was the ambitious “Waves” (2019), and he finally returns with “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” a musical psychological thriller that he co-wrote with pop star The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye and Reza Fahim. In fact, the movie’s story is based on the Weeknd’s sixth studio album of the same name.

The film has quite the cast, too, and stars Tesfaye, along with Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan. “Hurry Up Tomorrow” centers on an insomniac musician (Tesfaye) who encounters a mysterious stranger (Keough), leading to a journey that challenges everything he knows about himself.
The question mark might be Tesfaye himself. Previously, he made a cameo appearance as himself in “Uncut Gems” (2019) and starred in the HBO television series “The Idol” (2023), another project he originated, but it was riddled with terrible reviews and immediately canceled.
Still, Shults continues to be an exciting director, so we’re deeply curious about “Hurry Up Tomorrow.”
Here’s the official synopsis:
A musician plagued by insomnia is pulled into an odyssey with a stranger who begins to unravel the very core of his existence.
“Hurry Up Tomorrow” opens in theaters on May 16 via Lionsgate. Check out the new trailer that premiered at Cinema Con today in Las Vegas.
