John Wick may be dead (for now), but Lionsgate‘s hit action franchise lives on with “Ballerina.” The studio drops its first teaser for next summer’s blockbuster starring Ana de Armas today, and from the looks of things, it’s …exactly what “John Wick” fans expected. The interior decor, the clothing styles, and the fight scenes all have the flair of the franchise, only with a woman at the center of the revenge tale this time.

And that’s what “Ballerina” is: a “John Wick” movie except with de Armas instead of Keanu Reeves. Set between the events of “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “John Wick 4,” De Armas stars in the spinoff as Eve Macarro, a ballerina who seeks revenge against the people who murdered her family. And Macarro has some familiar faces backing her: Ian MacShane‘s Winston and the late Lance Reddick‘s Charon.
Anjelica Huston also stars as “The Director,” with Gabriel Byrne as the big bad in “Ballerina” and Norman Reedus in an undisclosed role. Other players include Catalina Sodena Moreno, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, and David Castañeda.
Action movie vet Len Wiseman directs “Ballerina” from a script by Shay Hatten, who wrote “Parabellum” and “JW4.” “John Wick” champion Chad Stahelski leads producers on the film with Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. “Ballerina” is a co-production from Summit Entertainment, Thunder Road Films, and 87 North Productions.
“Ballerina” hits theaters next summer on June 5. Will Ana de Armas be a worthy successor to Reeves? Watch the teaser for her spinoff below before making a guess.
