Got a Tip?

‘The Banshees of Inisherin,’ ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ & ‘The White Lotus’ Top 2023 SAG Awards Nominations

For the second year in a row, the Screen Actors Guild announced the prestigious SAG Awards nominations on…Instagram. This time around, Ashley Park and Haley Lu Richardson had the pleasure of revealing the nominees for the 29th edition of the awards. When the dust had settled “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once” made history tying “Shakespeare in Love” and two other films with the most nominations for a film in SAG Awards history, five.

“Banshees” and “Everything” were joined in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture Category by “The Fablemans,” “Women Talking” and “Babylon.” For those looking to correlate this particular category with the Best Picture nominees last year only four films duplicated Best Picture nominations. In 2021, just three. In 2020, four. In 2019, four. The five SAG ensemble nominees last made the Best Picture field in 2015. That would put “Babylon” and “Women Talking” in danger of missing out.

Not making the ensemble category is worrisome for the Best Picture-winning hopes of “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Elvis,” or “TAR.” The last film to win without an ensemble nomination was “The Shape of Water” in 2018, but it earned two individual SAG Awards nominations.

Unexpected nominations in the theatrical categories included two Netflix performances: Adam Sandler (“Hustle”) for Actor in a Leading Role and Ana de Armas (“Blonde”) for Actress in a Leading Role. It’s worth noting, however, Netflix tends to over-index with SAG voters compared to other guild honors, the Oscars and Emmy Awards.

Notable snubs in the theatrical categories included Michelle Williams (“The Fablemans”), Olivia Colman (“Empire of Light”) and Margot Robbie (“Babylon”) for an Actress in a Leading Role, Tom Cruise (“Top Gun: Maverick”), Paul Mescal (“Aftersun”) and Jeremy Pope (“The Inspection”) for Actor in a Leading Role, and Dolly De Leon (“Triangle of Sadness”), Jessie Buckley (“Women Talking”), Claire Foy (“Women Talking”), Ben Whishaw (“Women Talking”), Janelle Monae (“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”), Judd Hirsch (“The Fablemans”), Brad Pitt (“Babylon”) and Brian Tyree Henry (“Causeway”) in the supporting categories.

On the television side, it was somewhat surprising that two of 2022’s biggest hits, “House of Dragon” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” were both relegated to just the Stunt Ensemble category. Instead, the only new series to make the Ensemble in a Drama Series cut was “Severance.” It was joined by “Better Call Saul,” “Ozark,” “The Crown” and “The White Lotus.” For its final season, “Ozark” led all drama programs with four nominations including individual nods for Lara Linney, Jennifer Garner, and Jason Bateman.

In the comedy categories, freshman qualifiers “Abbott Elementary” and “The Bear” each landed two nods including the coveted Ensemble for a Comedy Series honor. They were joined by “Barry,” “Hacks” and “Only Murders in the Building.” Both “Barry” and “Murders” also landed two additional individual honors for Anthony Carrigan and Bill Hader as well as Steve Martin and Martin Short, respectively.

Both “Dahmer – Monster, The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and “Black Bird” landed two individual acting honors. Taron Egerton and newly crowned Golden Globe winner Paul Walter Hauser were honored in the Limited Series or Television Movie for the latter while Evan Peters and Nicey Nash-Betts took nominations for the former. Surprise nominations in the Limited Series or Television Movie categories went to SAG favorites Emily Blunt (“The English”), Sam Elliott (“1883”), and Steve Carell (“The Patient”).

The 2023 SAG Awards ceremony will be available on Netflix’s YouTube on Sunday, Feb 26, but in welcome news this morning, the union announced that the streamer will be the new home of the ceremony beginning in 2024.
