Over the weekend, we had the world premiere of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” One of the summer’s most anticipated releases, “Barbie” has quite a bit of hype built for the toy adaptation. And in the early social media reactions, there were plenty of people praising Gerwig’s work, as well as star Margot Robbie, but it feels as if Ryan Gosling is the real scene-stealer as Ken.
And in a new promo for the upcoming “Barbie” film, Ryan Gosling gets his chance to take the spotlight in a song titled, “Just Ken.” As has been teased, Gosling’s role in the film is more of self-discovery as Ken has to figure out what his world would be like if he isn’t Barbie’s main squeeze. Is it okay to be… just Ken?
If that sounds like a completely silly and ridiculous idea for a song, well you’re not wrong. But the best part about the song, and the film itself, is that it understands just how silly everything is and is poking fun at itself with tongue firmly planted in cheek.
While the marketing for “Barbie” has been top-notch and the early reactions are stellar, the real test is just how the general public is going to react to the film. Will people embrace Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken? We’ll find out soon enough when “Barbie” arrives in theaters on July 21. You can watch the new song/teaser for “Barbie” below:
