The Peabody Awards Board of Jurors announced the nominations for the 2019 Peabody Awards and 60 different television, streaming, radio/podcast and news programs are in the mix for 30 prestigious slots. There were over 1,200 entries this year that were selected by a unanimous vote of 19 individual jurors.

In a statement released by the organization, Jeffrey P. Jones, executive director of Peabody remarked, “It is our great honor to recognize the most powerful and compelling, but also most brilliant and creative programming of 2018. Across genres and platforms, these are stories that help us make sense of our world, and locate our humanity in the joys and tragedies and struggles of people worldwide.”
This year’s nominees included some expected selections such as HBO’s “Barry,” NBC’s “The Good Place,” FX’s “Pose,” BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” Netflix’s “Hannah Gadsby: Nanette” and in the documentary field, Hulu’s Oscar-nominated “Minding the Gap.” Less expected was the inclusion of Cartoon Network’s beloved “Steven Universe,” FX’s “The Americans” (it already won in 2015), the controversial “Atypical” and the well-reviewed but guild-awards rejected “Homecoming.” Surprise omissions included Netflix’s “Sex Education” FX’s “Escape at Dannemora,” HBO’s “Succession” and “Sharp Objects.”
Over the next several weeks, 30 winners will be announced by category: Documentary on April 16; Entertainment/Children’s & Youth on April 18; and News/Radio/Web/Public Service programming on April 23.
The winners will be celebrated at a ceremony on Saturday, May 18th in New York City.
