Singer Camila Cabello To Star In Sony's Live-Action 'Cinderella' From 'Blockers' Director

Disney has already exhausted its animated classic “Cinderella” with sequels, a massive live-action remake, and even an appearance in the recent “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” So, as far as Disney is concerned, “Cinderella” is old news. But over at Sony, the studio wants to re-invent the classic fairy tale from Charles Perrault with a new live-action film starring none other than pop star Camila Cabello.

Deadline is reporting that Sony is fast-tracking a new live-action “Cinderella” with Cabello as the star, based on a story from late night host James Corden. And instead of Kenneth Branagh, who helmed the Disney live-action remake, Sony has brought on filmmaker Kay Cannon to write and direct the new version of the classic.

No word on how the new story will differ from the earlier versions that were made famous by Disney. I mean, other than the fact that the normally blonde-haired, fair-skinned lead character will be portrayed by Cabello, who is a Cuban-American. This “Cinderella” will mark the feature film debut of the singer-turned-actress, after she has become one of the biggest names in music and former member of the pop group Fifth Harmony.

Cannon is coming off the success of her directorial debut “Blockers,” which was a breakout hit last year for Universal. Before that, she is was known as the woman who wrote all three “Pitch Perfect” films. Hopefully, she brings more of that “Blockers” energy (minus the R-rated stuff, naturally) instead of the “Pitch Perfect” nonsense (those films have aged really, really badly in a short amount of time).

No word on when Sony hopes to get “Cinderella” in theaters, but clearly with the casting underway, the studio is aiming to get this film in production sooner rather than later.
