Wakanda forever—and, following the conclusion of Marvel’s Multiverse Saga, well beyond it. Marvel Studios officially announced the third “Black Panther” film during its San Diego Comic-Con Hall H presentation, confirming that Ryan Coogler will return to write and direct. The film will open in theaters on December 15, 2028, with David Jonsson joining the MCU as the grown son of T’Challa and Nakia.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ended with Nakia revealing that she and the late T’Challa had a son, Toussaint, who also carries his father’s Wakandan name, T’Challa. Jonsson’s casting means Marvel is aging the character up considerably as the MCU moves into its post-“Secret Wars” era.
Jonsson first broke out on HBO’s “Industry” before earning wider attention with “Rye Lane,” “Alien: Romulus,” and “The Long Walk.” His casting also offers Marvel a path forward for the T’Challa legacy without recasting Chadwick Boseman’s version of the character.
Letitia Wright’s Shuri remains the current Black Panther and will appear in “Avengers: Doomsday,” so Jonsson’s arrival doesn’t necessarily mean an immediate changing of the guard. But it does position the younger T’Challa as a major part of Wakanda’s future. Thankfully, Marvel followed up by confirming in their official press release for the sequel that both Wright and Winston Duke’s M’Baku are going to be back for the third “Black Panther” installment after also appearing on stage alongside Jonsson.
While Marvel didn’t officially announce any other returning cast members at Comic-Con, presumably much of the Wakandan ensemble will be back, including Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba, and Michaela Coel (Daniel Kaluuya’s character is also alive and well in Wakanda, even if he’s been imprisoned for his coup).
Denzel Washington is also slated to appear in the film, after previously revealing that Coogler was writing a role for him and Coogler later confirming his intention to work with the actor on “Black Panther 3.” Washington did not appear at Comic-Con; however, Marvel made no mention of him during the presentation, and who he’ll play remains unclear.
Coogler has directed both previous “Black Panther” films and remained involved in the Wakandan corner of the MCU through the Disney+ animated series “Eyes of Wakanda.” Following the blockbuster success of “Sinners,” he’ll now return to Marvel to complete the trilogy.
