Amazon already has one giant fantasy series currently airing on Prime Video with “Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power.” Now they want to take over the streaming sci-fi market with “Blade Runner 2099,” a “Blade Runner” live-action sequel limited series, with Ridley Scott on board as executive producer.

Variety reports that Amazon has a formal order for the show after announcing its development in February. Scott first revealed the live-action series in November 2021, noting that its pilot had already been written. Plot details are under wraps, but the title indicates the series picks up fifty years after the events of “Blade Runner 2049,” Denis Villeneuve‘s 2017 sequel to Scott’s original “Blade Runner.” Also, no confirmation yet if Scott will direct any of the series.
Scott’s Scott Free Productions and Alcon Entertainment will co-executive produce the series with Amazon. As for other names attached to the series, Silka Luisa serves as showrunner, while “CHAOS” writer Tom Spezialy joins the writers’ team.
“The original ‘Blade Runner,’ directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce “Blade Runner 2099” to our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Amazon Studios in a press statement. “We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the “Blade Runner” franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, “Blade Runner 2099” will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”
So, how exactly will “2099” continue from the previous two films? The 2017 sequel saw Harrison Ford and Edward James Olmos reprise their roles from Scott’s 1982 film. Could Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, or Ana de Armas do something similar in the new series? It’s also unconfirmed with “2099” has any connection with the Adult Swim anime series, “Blade Runner: Black Lotus.” If “2099” ends up as another giant-scale TV show for Amazon, like “The Rings Of Power,” that could be in the cards, too.
More details about “Blade Runner 2099” will undoubtedly come in time, but look for this series to be one of the most anticipated on streaming in the next couple of years.
