Set 50 years after Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049,” the series returns to Los Angeles after a replicant uprising has fundamentally reordered the city. Humanity lost the ensuing war, leaving replicants in control and humans relegated to second-class status.
“The war has happened, and the humans have lost,” Luisa told Entertainment Weekly this week. “The replicants are now the power brokers of the city.”
Schafer stars as Cora, a fugitive who has spent her life running and hiding behind different identities. In a final attempt to escape that existence, she assumes her most dangerous identity yet: a Blade Runner. Cora is forced to partner with Olwen, Yeoh’s replicant Blade Runner, who has only days remaining before her predetermined death. Together, they pursue a runaway carrying a secret that could bring down the city’s fragile new order.
Olwen’s mortality deliberately reverses the perspective of Rutger Hauer’s Roy Batty in Ridley Scott’s original “Blade Runner.” Rather than observing a replicant’s fear of death through the eyes of a human pursuer, “Blade Runner 2099” places that terror at the center of its protagonist’s experience.
“She knows she has only days left to live because replicants know down to the day when they’re gonna die,” Luisa explained. “It’s certain and it’s definitive.”
Cora presents the inverse dilemma: a human who has spent so long disguising herself that she has lost touch with her humanity. “The question for the series is: Once you’ve lost your humanity, can you regain it?” Luisa said.
Dimitri Abold and Lewis Gribben join Yeoh and Schafer as series regulars. The recurring cast includes Katelyn Rose Downey, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Sheila Atim, Matthew Needham, Tom Burke, and Maurizio Lombardi.
Luisa serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Scott, Kosove, Johnson, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. Jonathan van Tulleken, who directed episodes of “Shōgun,” executive produced and directed the first two installments.
