Sure, all eyes are on the upcoming “Bond 25” and what filmmaker Danny Boyle plans to bring to the beloved superspy franchise. However, it’s been widely known that this outing is probably the end of the road for Daniel Craig as 007, which leads many to speculate as to who the next Bond should be. We’ve heard suggestions from Hollywood types about a person of color taking over the role, as well as potentially a woman playing 007. But if you ask former Bond, Pierce Brosnan, he has other thoughts in mind.
The actor is currently making the rounds, promoting the sequel to “Mamma Mia,” and was asked by the Daily Mail about his thoughts on the current state of the Bond franchise and where he thinks the future lies for the famous spy. First, the question comes up about the #MeToo movement, and how that might affect the notorious ladies’ man spy.

“Bond is Bond and you can’t change that. I think a woman could play Bond but it wouldn’t be James Bond,” says the actor. Now, it’s unclear whether he means that a woman could play it but it wouldn’t be “James Bond,” and would perhaps have to be “Jane Bond.” Or maybe he believes that the characters more misogynistic traits are intrinsic to the character. But either way, that doesn’t matter because Brosnan’s choice for the next Bond is definitely not a female.
“Daniel Craig has been an incredible Bond. He’s very physical, he looks lethal. You genuinely believe this is someone who could kill a man. He’s complained about doing the part because he’s put himself through a lot physically, but he will do the next movie, and then I think Tom Hardy could be a good Bond. I’d be happy to see him do it. You need an actor who can put a bit of wiggle into it – that’s what makes Bond,” continued Brosnan.

A Tom Hardy Bond would be an interesting choice, for sure. The actor has been known to throw himself head first into his roles, and would probably make a perfectly good 007. And sure, Hardy surely has the “wiggle” necessary. But at this point, it appears unlikely the actor would be down to take over a franchise that has taken its toll on Craig and previous Bonds before him.
Either way, that’s still a long way off, as we won’t get to see “Bond 25” until November 8, 2019.
