It seems like an eternity ago that Netflix debuted “Bright.” The feature film, directed by David Ayer and starring Joel Edgerton and Will Smith, was the first major blockbuster produced and distributed by the streaming service, released just over two years ago. Despite terrible reviews, the film found an audience on the streaming service (this is still the subscriber base that loves Adam Sandler films, of course), and now, it appears that the sequel has finally taken a big step forward with the hiring of Louis Leterrier.
According to Deadline, Leterrier is the filmmaker that Netflix is courting to bring “Bright 2” to life. The sequel has been in development since shortly after the 2017 film was released, and though it has had a few stumbles, the platform is still full-steam ahead on making sure it happens. The first film told the story of a fantasy world that mixes the modern, real-life Earth with that of a ‘Lord of the Rings’-esque history of trolls, orcs, fairies, and magic. It’s an interesting premise but resulted in a David Ayer film that was unable to capture the magic that it should have.
The sequel will once again feature the cop partners played by Edgerton and Smith, but this time Ayer won’t be behind the camera, with Leterrier taking over the role. However, Ayer’s fingerprints will still be on the film, as he is one of the script’s co-writers along with Evan Spiliotopoulos and T.S. Nowlin.

Leterrier is no stranger to blockbuster filmmaking. Not by a longshot. The director is probably best known for films such as the first two “Transporter” films, “The Incredible Hulk,” “Clash of the Titans,” and “Now You See Me.” As you can tell from those credits, the French filmmaker is someone akin to Michael Bay, with a ton of style and flash to his filmmaking. Most recently, Leterrier worked as a director on Netflix’s acclaimed ‘Dark Crystal’ series.
The report claims that “Bright 2” will begin production as soon as Netflix is able to begin filming original content again.
