Netflix Brings Back Joe Russo To Script 'Extraction 2' With Sam Hargrave & Chris Hemsworth Likely To Return

After a debut that Netflix touts as the biggest ever for a feature film on the streaming platform, you had to imagine the company was going to do everything in its power to get a sequel to “Extraction” up and going as quickly as possible. And according to a new report from Deadline, that’s exactly what happened.

The report claims that Joe Russo is back to write the script for “Extraction 2,” with the hopes that the script will be greenlit by Netflix and that director Sam Hargrave and star Chris Hemsworth will return for the next Tyler Rake adventure. The first film starred Hemsworth as Rake, a badass mercenary that is given the mission to rescue a young boy from the clutches of bad people and return him to his family. Honestly, the plot was fairly secondary, as the real selling point for Netflix viewers is watching the actor kick all sorts of ass. And that he did.

“The deal is closed for me to write ‘Extraction 2,’ and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be,” Russo said. “We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.”

He added, “There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal. What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action.”

Obviously, it’s still entirely too early to know what story “Extraction 2” will tell and whether or not Netflix will be happy with Joe Russo’s script. However, as mentioned above, it’s highly unlikely that the streaming service is going to let the potential franchise sit on the shelf for too long. You have to assume that everyone involved would love to get back to work on the sequel as soon as possible.
