‘Brother’ Trailer: Clement Virgo’s New Directorial Effort Promises A Pulsing & Prescient Tale About The Bond Between Siblings

“Follow my every move:” Based on the award-winning novel of the same name by David Chariandy, “Brother,” the latest film from Clement Virgo, is a sweeping and mesmerizing story about familial bonds, the power of music, and the resilience of community. Set against the backdrop of the early days of the Toronto hip-hop scene, a movement fueled by the children of Caribbean immigrants, brothers Francis (Lamar Johnson, “The Last of Us“) and Michael (Aaron Pierre, “Old“) find themselves amidst sweltering temperatures and rising tensions, setting off a series of events that change their lives forever. Promising to be equal parts pulsing, sweeping, and elegiac, the latest directorial effort from Virgo will be nothing short of an inimitable odyssey.

Originally from Jamaica, Virgo immigrated to Canada at 11 and grew up in Toronto, the arena in which “Brother” takes place. Having worked in television and film for over three decades, Virgo is best known for directing “Poor Boy’s Game,” a 2007 film set in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and starring Danny Glover, tackled themes of class struggle and racial tensions via the medium of boxing. Virgo has also directed episodes of “The L Word,” “The Wire,” and “Empire.”

Having already premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, “Brother” will be in theaters and on-demand on August 4, courtesy of Vertical. Watch the new trailer below.
